POO POWER! IS AN EDUCATION FINALIST IN THE BANKSIA AWARDS
Poo Power! and its creator Duncan Chew have been announced as a finalist of the Banksia Sustainability Awards in recognition of demonstrated leadership and innovation in "lifting awareness, improving understanding, advancing social and community consciousness of sustainability issues to achieve real, positive change."
Duncan Chew is one of ten finalists in the Education 'Raising the Bar' category for his innovative project that uses dog waste as a source of renewable energy that is to be used to light public dog parks.
When Mr. Chew was notified of this achievement, he explained "Australia has embraced Poo Power! and science has shown us that bioenergy from waste has a place in Australia's energy future. Like the sun, the supply of poo is endless."
Poo Power! is an education campaign of the environmental and social issues of dog waste including biogeneration from waste, ecological sanitation and water ecosystem protection.
Poo Power! is winning support as this achievement follows earlier successes in the national Clean Energy Award for Community Engagement and the Yarra City Council's Local Hero Award nomination.
The Banksia Sustainability Awards celebrates its 25th year of celebrating Australia's leadership and innovation in environmental sustainability.
The winners will be presented with their awards at the Banksia Gala Dinner Presentation on the 9th October 2013 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Mr Chew owns two boxer dogs - Sally (13) and Diesel (6) - and credits them as his source of inspiration.
Poo Power! is delivered under the auspice of the Yarra Energy Foundation; and is proudly supported by Melbourne Water and Inspiring Australia.
